In particular, stay-at-home moms sometimes navigate the rewarding yet time consuming responsibilities of raising children and running a household. But that doesn’t mean that these kinds of resourceful women (holla, smart moms!) can’t make some money on side! This article focuses on some of the questions you should ask yourself if you are a stay-at-home mom thinking of starting a home business to supplement your family’s income.

- What are your goals and how will a home business help you achieve them? This question forces you to ask yourself (and possibly your spouse as well) what you want to accomplish. It’s a big picture question and your ability to answer it may determine how you earn a part time income. Ideally your goal should hit some kind of reasonable financial target as well as include work you are good at and also enjoy.
- How much time do you have to work on your home business? Some ideas may take more time to get off the ground than others. Others may include simply putting in hours working for someone else online or on the phone. You need to make sure you have that time to devote to your home business. If your kids are in school, you might have that block of time for your job. If your kids are younger and still at home, you might only have nap times and/or evenings to work.
- Can you find time where you’re by yourself to either take or make phone calls? Many customer service companies outsource phone work to those working at home. The problem is that you won’t sound like a professional representative of a company with your child talking to you or crying in the background. If you have young children, this kind of work might not be ideal for you right now.
- What are your hobbies and can you turn them into a home based business? For example, I’m enjoying crochet these days. If my work were good enough, I could open an etsy shop and sell my finished crocheted items. If I designed crochet pattern, I could sell those as well. Can you turn your hobby into a business?
- What are your skills and/or talents? What kind of work did you do before the kids came along? Can you use your skills from back then to fuel your home business? For example if you worked in a bakery and made cakes, it would be pretty easy to make wedding cakes from home for clients or even baked goods to sell. Writing has always come easy to me so I find myself gravitating to online writing jobs and websites as a way to use my talent to make a bit of money here and there.
- Are you already doing something you can earn money from? What are you doing that you can monetize? Are you blogging? Consider doing some research about the next step you need to take to earn money by blogging. Are you babysitting your sister’s kids during the weekdays? Consider getting licensed to run a home daycare business.

Hopefully posing some of these questions has helped you get a clearer idea of possible home businesses you would be successful at running. From here, you can create a business plan and work on financing. Before you know it, you can be earning a good income while staying at home!
